http://music-mix.ew.com/2009/10/02/mr-ma gic-rip/ Sad news today, yet again: John “Mr. Magic” Rivas has passed away, reportedly after a heart attack. It’s possible that his name doesn’t ring an immediate bell with you, but if you’re a fan of hip-hop in any capacity, take a minute to read up on his legacy. Mr. Magic hosted what is generally recognized as the world’s first successful rap-only radio mix show beginning in 1982 on New York City’s WBLS-FM. Among other things, Mr. Magic’s show introduced the world to his co-host Marley Marl, who would soon be recognized as one of the genre’s most talented producers. In 1994, the Notorious B.I.G. memorably paid tribute to the show in the opening verse of his breakout single “Juicy”: “It was all a dream/I used to read Word Up magazine/Salt-n-Pepa and Heavy D up in the limousine/Hanging pictures on my wall/Every Saturday, ‘Rap Attack,’ Mr. Magic, Marley Marl.“

I'm delaying my move to DC by six months. I need to look into scholarship/grant/financial aid money. I want to pay for this myself and any help I can get will be great! I may consider getting a T.A. position at the university since from those who have done that told me they get their school paid for, room and board, and a stipend! How cool is that? I may go that route, and get financial aid on top of it! The reason i'm doing this is to distance myself from my family. I'm beginning to not want their help with this in any way. This stems from a great and irreparable philosophical and moral divide I have with them. Case and point, I told them about a new girl I am very interested in and I didn't get "oh she's pretty" or "wow she does all that?" I get instead "she looks black." Are you fucking kidding me? I find someone that I like a lot , has everything going for her in life, very pretty in body and mind, and has her ducks in a row and now I have to worry because she might have a black ancestor? This is getting unreal. Un-fucking-real. Subsequently, I learned my parents only adopted my brother and me because we had blond hair and blue eyes. As soon as my mom said that she began to backpedal saying "we did it for other reasons too." That might be so, but I now know it's not the primary motivation for getting adopted. That hurts. Another thing, my mom said, "I want grandkids with blond hair and blue eyes." Looks like she's going to get NO grandkids instead. Who the fuck are these people to tell me who I can and cannot be with? They need to be deported back to 1935 Berlin where they belong. Their parents fought a freaking WAR against the Nazis to combat an ideal they now champion and it disgusts me to no end. The more I think about this the more pissed off I get but getting it off my chest now is great. It's been a tiring few months getting the album together and I believe I beat the pants off of this one compared to my first effort. I feel the album is more coherent and much better put together and is just an overall better product. I see me making a transition to do more R&B as opposed to Hip-Hop even though I have a couple EPs lined up for the future to get out of the door...I just find R&B more challenging to make, and the hopeless romantic in me enjoys it too heh My formal visit to GWU ended up turning the tables essentially...it's now them recruiting me heavily and they expect me to start in January. I have so much to work out up here before I go though, most importantly, keeping my job up here whilst schooling for 2 years down there. Gotta love the advantages of telecommuting and hopefully I can leverage it. I enjoy working at my company and expect to be with them for years to come. I managed to turn potential disaster into something very promising while in the DC area this weekend...I thank a certain lady for helping me avert that...she got me through an emergency in the fact that I ripped a contact and needed a pair of glasses and FAST. She came through in the clutch and got me what I needed to get. It also helps that she's a dope person and took an interest in my work, school, and music. I'm definitely making it a point to return the favor by at minimum buying her lunch or dinner the next time I visit. She's great people and I hope she stays in touch. I'm only mad I showered and threw some stuff on when I went...I looked a hot mess. I promise though, people, I clean up well ;) I've been going hard all year and hope I don't burn out by September...it's getting harder to wake up each day just with the overall workload I'm under and having to go the extra mile to accomplish what I want to accomplish. Wish me luck, y'all. Oh, download my album, either by clicking the link in my post below. I put a lot of effort into this and want to share with the world! Feedback is much appreciated.
